Russian Threats to Britain and Europe

LONDON (Reuters) – Ken McCallum, the Director General of the UK’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has warned that Russia’s military intelligence, the GRU, is actively seeking to cause disruption across Britain and Europe. In his recent annual address, McCallum pointed out that Russian state actors are using various proxies to carry out their activities, including criminals and drug traffickers.

Terrorism Concerns: Al-Qaeda and ISIS

In addition to the Russian threat, McCallum expressed concerns about the growing danger posed by terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda and ISIS. He noted that these groups are trying to exploit conflicts in the Middle East to further their agendas. Citing the attack on a Moscow concert hall in March, McCallum warned that ISIS has resumed efforts to export terrorism globally.

Escalating State Threats from Russia and Iran

McCallum reported a 48% increase in state threat investigations over the past year, with Russia and Iran leading the charge. Despite the expulsion of over 750 Russian diplomats from Europe since the invasion of Ukraine, the GRU continues its efforts to generate “mayhem” in Britain and Europe through reckless acts of arson, sabotage, and more.

Iran’s Growing Involvement in UK Plots

The MI5 chief also accused Iran of being behind multiple plots targeting the UK. Since January 2022, MI5 and British police have dealt with 20 Iranian-backed plots, many posing lethal threats to UK citizens and residents. McCallum described these Iranian plots as unprecedented in their scale and frequency.

Terrorism Threats at Home

McCallum highlighted the significant role MI5 has played in preventing terrorist attacks. Since March 2017, MI5 and the British police have disrupted 43 late-stage terror plots. He also raised concerns about the increasing number of young individuals being drawn into terrorism. According to McCallum, 13% of those under investigation for terrorism-related activities are under 18, a threefold increase in just three years.

Conclusion

Ken McCallum’s speech underlines the wide range of threats facing the UK—from state actors like Russia and Iran to terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS. MI5 remains vigilant in its efforts to counter these growing dangers.
